To write or promote?

I have read on other blogs and online that independent authors should try to develop a writing reputation though blogs, featuring on other people’s blogs, having a website etc before they have even finished the book and publish it.

At first I felt a sense of pressure to do that, so I wouldn’t be a completely obscure writer and at least my blog fans would buy a copy of my book. I did try…a little…like this post and maybe if I have time (and remember) another post or so in the future. Quite frankly I hate marketing and I would rather spend that time writing my book.

Perhaps I will just occasionally post an update about my progress. So here it is:

Currently suffering writers block because I am trying to decide the details of the storyline for the next chapter. Also spent a ridiculous amount of time researching and deciding character’s names.

Happy reading until the next update!

I agree that there’s a lot of pressure to market and stuff before the book is even written but as a reader I tend to get annoyed reading writing advice and stuff from people who haven’t written anything. Like I always feel like I’d be happy to give advice once I can get published, but before then, I’m really just guessing and I don’t know if it will work or not.
I’d say focus on actually writing for the time being, so that you actually have something to market later on.
